Comprehensive Eye Exams

Guthrie Optometry aims to provide the highest quality vision care and to keep the patient informed throughout the process. The exam includes a full health and ocular history, personal customized prescription glasses, and dilated health assessment with treatment and prevention. Guthrie Optometry also is equipped with the latest technology including OCT (optical coherence tomography) for advanced diagnosis of eye disease

Pediatric Eye Exams

Comprehensive eye exams with an optometrist are the only way to tell if your child’s eyes are developing properly. Many eye health problems can be treated if caught early. Eye exams also make sure your child can learn. Children who cannot see the board, focus on a picture, or follow words in a book may struggle to achieve their full learning potential. Vision problems can also impact their hand-eye coordination for physical activities and even impact their social development. Almost three-quarters of Ontario’s parents are unaware that vision problems can cause speech difficulties, nearly two-thirds are unaware that they can lead to developmental delays and half of parents do not realize that a vision problem may be the cause of short attention spans in children.

Diabetic Eye Exams

Diabetes can seriously affect your eyes, causing temporary or permanent vision loss.  Annual eye exams are critical for people living with diabetes, and are covered by OHIP regardless of age. Diabetic eye exams are similar to regular eye exams in many ways. However, during a diabetic eye exam, your eye doctor will specifically focus on the health of your retina and integrity of the blood vessels in your eye.

Glaucoma Management

A comprehensive eye examination is the first step to detecting glaucoma. Your optometrist will measure the internal pressure of your eye. They will also inspect the drainage angle inside the eye and look into your eye to take a detailed look at your optic nerve. Guthrie Optometry also uses advanced imaging devices(OCT) when assessing your optic nerve. Treatment of glaucoma will depend on the type, severity, and progress of the disease. It cannot be cured, but it can be controlled, often with daily eye drops. Laser surgery is also an effective way to control glaucoma and maintain your remaining vision.  Once vision is lost due to glaucoma, it cannot be restored. This is why regular preventive eye exams with your optometrist are important

Have you noticed changes in your vision, like cloudiness, glare, or difficulty seeing at night? It could be due to cataracts, a common eye condition that can be effectively treated through cataract surgery.

Advancements in cataract surgery do not just replace the cloudy lens of the eye but now you can select a premium lens replacement.   These are called Intraocular Lenses (IOLs). Premium IOLs go beyond basic vision correction – they can enhance your vision and reduce the need for glasses.  If you’re considering cataract surgery, schedule a comprehensive eye examination with Guthrie Optometry and we can assess your unique needs and guide you on the best surgical option.
